Seriously, don't we have a kugerrand or something? And that is "worth" whatever the current price of gold is trading at, right? Because it weighs 1 ounce.
Fillings are not 100% "gold" if I'm not mistaken, otherwise they would never last. Gold is a pretty soft metal, on its own.
Yeah, I think you can pay for things with gold, but it isn't very smart.
